More voices for Atmos1
Atmos1 reads aloud in the voices on your computer. On Windows it can also download natural voices. Every voice runs on your computer, so what you read never leaves it.
Natural voices (Windows)
These sound more like a person reading. You download the ones you want, once. After that they work without the internet.
- Open Atmos1 and go to Settings, then Reader.
- Under Voice type, choose Natural voice (downloaded).
- Press Download next to a voice. Each one is roughly 60 to 115 MB. Atmos1 shows the exact size before you start. You need to be online for this one time.
- When it has finished, press Listen to hear it. Tick it to read with it.
Each voice says how it starts. "Fastest to start" suits an older computer. "Richest sound" is the fullest, and takes a little longer to begin. Press Remove to get the space back whenever you like.
Natural voices are not on Mac yet. Your Mac has good voices of its own. See how to add more of them below.
Add more voices on Windows
- Open Windows Settings. Press the Windows key, type Settings and press Enter.
- Choose Time & language, then Speech.
- Under Manage voices, choose Add voices. Pick a language and press Add.
- Go back to Atmos1. In Settings, then Reader, set Voice type to System voice and press Refresh voices. The new voice appears in the list.
Atmos1 can show every voice Windows shares with other apps. Windows keeps a few voices for its own screen reader, called Narrator, and those may not show up here. If a voice does not appear after you press Refresh voices, choose another one.
Add more voices on Mac
- Open System Settings, then Accessibility, then Read & Speak. On older versions of macOS this is called Spoken Content.
- Next to System voice, open the menu and choose Manage Voices. Download the voices you like. The Enhanced voices sound the most natural, and they appear in Atmos1's list.
- Siri voices do not appear in the list, because macOS keeps them for itself. To hear one, choose it as your System voice on the same screen. Then in Atmos1 choose System default.
- Go back to Atmos1. In Settings, then Reader, press Refresh voices. The new voices appear in the list.
If a voice does not work
- Press Refresh voices, then look again.
- Close Atmos1 and open it again. Then press Refresh voices.
- If a natural voice will not download, check your internet and press Download again. It carries on from where it stopped.
- If Atmos1 cannot use a natural voice when you read, it reads that sentence in your system voice, so reading never stops.
- Still stuck? Use Report a problem in Atmos1 and tell us what you saw.
What this means for your privacy
Voices run on your computer. The words you read are never sent anywhere to be spoken.
Downloading a natural voice asks huggingface.co, the website that stores the voice files, for that one file. They can see your internet address and which voice you chose. They do not see anything you read or say.
The programs and voices Atmos1 uses, and who made them, are listed on the open-source licences page. Our privacy notice has the rest.
